What Durable actually replaces
The product is more than a page generator. A contact form can write directly into the Customers area; profiles can carry custom fields, messages, internal notes and invoices; bookings can create or update customer records; and the site, CRM and appointment calendar share one account. For a solo consultant, clinic, salon, repairer or contractor, that can replace a basic site builder, lightweight CRM, booking widget and invoice tracker.
- The bundle is most valuable when the same person owns marketing, enquiries and scheduling.
- It is less compelling when the business already relies on a mature CRM, help desk, accounting system or marketing automation platform.
- Treat the CRM as an operational convenience, not an automatic replacement for regulated records, accounting or sector-specific case management.
The 30-second site is a first draft, not the launch process
Durable can generate pages, copy and imagery quickly, but the published business still owns factual accuracy. The editor supports pages and sections, preset layouts, global colours, fonts and corners, custom sections generated from prompts, and targeted HTML, CSS or JavaScript embeds. Custom code is visible in preview or on the live site rather than necessarily inside the editor, and Durable warns that complex scripts can conflict with the platform or hurt performance.
- Replace generated testimonials, statistics, certifications and service claims unless they are real and provable.
- Check every telephone number, email address, location, price and opening hour.
- Preview desktop and mobile, then test every form, button, calendar and embedded widget on the published domain.
Plan limits change the workflow
The Free, Launch and Grow tiers all advertise unlimited AI-generated pages and unlimited traffic, but the business tools are not unlimited. Free is capped at 10 customers, two blog posts, two lead replies, five images and 10 AI chats. Launch raises those limits to 20 lead replies, 10 blog posts, 50 images and 1,000 AI chats per month. Grow raises the published limits again and adds unlimited team members. A busy lead campaign can therefore outgrow Launch even when website traffic itself is unlimited.
- Forecast new enquiries, not just page views.
- Count how many AI-generated posts and images the monthly content plan needs.
- Ask what happens when an agent limit is reached: stopped automation is a customer-service risk, not merely a content inconvenience.
CRM and lead handling are practical but deliberately lightweight
Website submissions flow into Customers, where the business can search contacts, add custom fields, keep notes, review messages and manage invoices. Custom fields support text, multi-line text, dropdowns, checkboxes, radio buttons and dates, and can be exposed on website forms. Customer records can be selected and exported to CSV, giving the contact database a documented exit route even though the full website does not have one.
- Design form fields around the decision you need to make: service, location, budget, preferred date and contact route.
- Do not collect sensitive or regulated information simply because a custom field exists.
- Schedule periodic CSV exports if the customer list is operationally important.
Bookings go well beyond a simple calendar link
Durable documents service prices, durations, slot increments, buffer times, locations, intake questions, minimum notice and maximum booking windows. Google Calendar can receive Durable appointments, show external events, respect busy status and optionally cancel a Durable booking when its linked Google event is deleted. Those are meaningful capabilities for an appointment-led business, but they need a real end-to-end test before launch.
- Set Africa/Nairobi explicitly and verify what both staff and customers see.
- Test rescheduling, cancellation emails, busy-time blocking and calendar disconnection.
- Check that intake questions collect enough information without turning the booking form into a long application.
Payments are service-payment tools, not a full online store
For bookings, Durable documents four policies: no payment required, invoice after the appointment, full prepayment, and card authorisation followed by capture after the appointment. It uses Stripe for payment processing and says Durable adds no extra processing fee. This can work for consultations and fixed-price appointments. It does not create the product catalogue, variants, inventory, cart, shipping, fulfilment and returns stack expected from Shopify or WooCommerce.
- A payment link is not the same product as a native storefront.
- Refund rules can still leave the business paying a non-refundable processor fee.
- Map tax, receipts, cancellations and failed-payment handling before accepting the first live booking.
The Kenya payment question needs a live onboarding test
Stripe currently lists Kenya in its extended network, while Durable’s payment documentation says availability and fees depend on the Stripe account region. That is encouraging but not proof that every Durable payment option, currency, settlement route or local method will be available to a Kenyan account. The checked Durable documentation does not promise a native M-Pesa checkout. A Kenyan buyer should verify the actual Stripe or extended-network onboarding path and run a small live transaction and refund.
- Confirm the legal entity and bank account accepted during onboarding.
- Confirm displayed currency, customer payment methods, settlement currency and payout timing.
- If M-Pesa is essential, obtain written confirmation or use a tested external payment link or embed rather than assuming it is included.
SEO controls are real, but automation is not a ranking guarantee
The pricing comparison lists optimized metadata, heading tags, JSON-LD, sitemap and robots.txt, fast mobile pages and advanced SEO/GEO on paid plans. Page settings support titles, descriptions, Open Graph images, editable slugs and 301 redirects. Search Console can be verified with custom code and the generated sitemap can be submitted. Durable also documents up to five additional translated languages with translated SEO metadata. These are useful technical foundations; none removes the need for original local content, trustworthy links, accurate business information and measurement.
- Create separate service or location pages only when each page has genuinely useful local content.
- Review AI-written titles and descriptions rather than publishing them in bulk.
- Validate JSON-LD, indexing and Core Web Vitals on the live site; this review did not independently reproduce Durable’s performance claims.
Ownership is split between the domain, contacts and site
Durable documents CSV export for customers and a transfer process for domains registered through Durable. Its April 2026 transfer policy requires at least three consecutive months of active subscription, a Durable-registered domain and an account in good standing; support supplies the EPP code, and the pricing FAQ warns that transfer can take a couple of weeks. That protects the address, not the complete page design, CMS and business-tool behaviour. No official complete self-hostable site export was found in the documentation checked.
- Register or connect the domain in an account the business controls whenever possible.
- Export contacts before cancellation and separately preserve copy, images, policies and analytics.
- Budget for a rebuild if leaving; do not cancel until the replacement site and domain transfer are verified.
Security and performance claims need the right evidence label
Durable says sites use Cloudflare-backed delivery with SSL, firewall and DDoS protection, and describes automatic image compression, lazy loading, CSS and JavaScript minification and CDN delivery. Those are credible platform controls, but this review did not run controlled uptime, Lighthouse, penetration, backup-restore or incident-response tests. Treat them as vendor-published architecture claims rather than measured Phonova results.
- Use strong account security and restrict team access even when hosting security is managed.
- Keep independent copies of business-critical content and customer exports.
- Measure the final site with its real images, embeds and third-party scripts; those additions can change performance materially.
Who should choose Durable—and who should not
Choose Durable when speed, bookings and simple lead operations matter more than design-system control or backend extensibility. Skip it for a serious product store, a content publication with complex editorial workflows, a regulated customer database, an application with custom server logic, or a team whose exit requirement is a complete portable codebase and database.
- Best fit: small appointment-led and quote-led service businesses.
- Conditional fit: brochure sites with a few external payment links or embeds.
- Poor fit: inventory-led ecommerce, marketplaces, membership platforms and custom web applications.
Questions buyers actually need answered
Is Durable really free?
Yes. The published Free tier includes a Durable subdomain, hosting, unlimited traffic, a mobile site and limited CRM and AI allowances. It does not include a connected external domain, paid bookings, calendar sync or the paid-plan SEO and support features.
What does Launch cost for a full year?
The checked pricing page shows $25 on monthly billing and $22/month on its annual comparison. Multiplying the annual equivalent gives $264 for 12 months; that total is an editorial calculation, so verify the amount, tax and currency shown at checkout.
Can Durable accept bookings and payment?
Paid plans document calendar-based bookings, custom intake questions and payment policies including invoicing, full prepayment and capture after the appointment. Processing runs through Stripe and availability depends on the connected account region.
Does Durable support M-Pesa in Kenya?
The official Durable pages checked do not promise a native M-Pesa checkout. Stripe lists Kenya through its extended network, but you should verify the exact onboarding, payment methods, settlement and refund flow in the live account before choosing Durable for payments.
Can Durable run an online store?
Durable can support simple service payments, invoices, external payment links and embeds, but it is not designed as a native catalogue, cart, inventory, shipping and fulfilment platform. Use a dedicated commerce platform for a serious product store.
How much SEO control does Durable provide?
Durable documents page titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph images, slugs, 301 redirects, sitemap, robots.txt, heading tags and JSON-LD, plus paid SEO and GEO tools. These controls support indexing; they do not guarantee rankings or replace locally useful content.
Can I export my customer data?
Yes. Durable documents selecting customer records and downloading them as a CSV. Export regularly if the CRM contains business-critical leads or customer history.
Can I export the complete website?
No official complete self-hostable site export was found in the checked documentation. Preserve copy and media separately, export customer data, retain control of the domain and plan for a rebuild if you leave.
Can I keep a domain registered through Durable?
Durable says a qualifying registered domain can be transferred with support. Its current policy requires three consecutive months of active subscription, a Durable-registered domain and an account in good standing; the process can take time, so start before cancellation.
Who is Durable best for?
It is best for solo and small service businesses that want to launch quickly and manage enquiries, appointments and simple invoicing in one place. It is a weak fit for deep design control, complex commerce, custom applications or teams requiring complete code portability.
Evidence boundary
This is a buying analysis, not an invented hands-on test. We verified the published offer and policies, separated introductory equivalents from money charged, and discounted claims we could not independently benchmark. Recheck the final checkout and keep an independent backup or export before moving a production service.
